Roswell UFO Encounter

An important anniversary required detailed coordination of more than 250 media organizations.

Then New Mexico Tourism Secretary John Garcia saw the great potential in the 50th anniversary of a “crash” in Southwest New Mexico that many purport to be an alien spacecraft. Secretary Garcia tapped The Garrity Group to invite and coordinate the media relations effort for the 1997 Roswell UFO Encounter.

The Garrity Group coordinated more than 250 news media organizations, arranging lodging for some at local convalescent homes and ranch houses (the days before AirBnB and VRBO). The team coordinates service and information in the media center, some reporters call it the best service they’ve ever received. Working to increase tourism for the City of Roswell, knowing that this would be a great opportunity to promote the area and regional attractions, the hybrid Tourism/TGG team generated coverage in a number of national and international media including this article in Wired. The team went on to serve the City of Roswell and the regional tourism board for nearly a decade, entrenching Roswell as an “out of this world destination.”
