Albuquerque, NM. – According to the 2020 Garrity Perception Survey, New Mexico residents have unique perspectives of education. Confidence in educators is strong, 69 percent of New Mexico residents trust teachers, ranking second out of fifteen professions. When the focus is on K-12 institutions, 41 percent of New Mexicans have a favorable impression of public schools; ranking fourteenth out of seventeen industries. The scientific survey of 408 residents has a 95 percent level of confidence.

“People connect with people which is why trust of teachers is so much higher than favorability of public schools,” said Tom Garrity; President and CEO of The Garrity Group Public Relations. “Because teachers are a trusted source, administration of public schools will be well served to share important information through their teachers, as a partner in the communications process.”

Teachers have the highest level of trust among females, residents who identify as Hispanic, residents over the age of 65 years, are college graduates and live in Northwest New Mexico. New Mexicans who are less likely to trust teachers live in North Central New Mexico, are not registered to vote and have lived in New Mexico for less than eight years. New Mexico residents who are favorable of public schools include those earning less than $20,000, residents in the north central region, people with a high school education or less, identify themselves as Hispanic and residents age 50 and over. On the flip side, residents who are less likely to have a favorable impression of public schools include those with a household income of $80,000 and over, people who have at least some college education, under the age of 50, residents in the Albuquerque Metro Area and people living in Eastern New Mexico.
